Back in the '90s, I remember watching Suzanne Somers—a wellness pioneer who played the ditzy blonde Chrissy on Three’s Company—being interviewed on a talk show. She lined up all the supplements she took to stay young and live long, and I gagged. Seventy-five a day. Seventy-five!
I thought, “My gosh, I could never.” As I headed off to teach my third workout class of the day. (Don’t ask. This was back in my young, dumb, pre-Jesus, and body obsessed stage of life.)
I share that story to let you know: I’m not a supplement queen. I do my best to meet my energy, vitamin, and mineral needs through food. But as I’ve aged—and as our environment (soils, air, and water) continues to be affected by various things—my bloodwork proves I need support. I’ve learned to overcome my gag reflex.
My Top 3 Daily Supplements
Whether you’ve got bloodwork to back it up or not, most women can benefit from the following:
1. Collagen
Why: Collagen keeps the structural integrity of our skin, hair, nails, and bones as we age.
What happens with age: Collagen production decreases, leading to joint stiffness, thinning hair, and more fragile skin.
My take: I call collagen the Jell-O for your body—it keeps you supple (yes, even jiggly!) and less rigid.
2. Creatine
Why: Creatine is a naturally occurring compound in your muscles and brain. It helps convert energy at the cellular level.
The myth: Once thought to be only for bodybuilders.
The truth: It’s one of the most researched and effective supplements for women—especially in midlife—for brain health, hormone support, and muscle preservation.
Why it matters: Women lose 3–8% of muscle per decade after age 30, and even more after 60. Creatine helps slow that loss and supports mental clarity too.
3. Protein Powder
Why: Muscle acts like body armor—protecting us from falls and buffering the wear and tear of living in a fallen world. Many people in the United States are deficient in protein intake due to the low RDA standards. According to Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, 40% of women over the age of 60 are deficient in protein.
The science: Your body can’t produce the 9 essential amino acids needed to build and maintain muscle. You must get them from protein intake.
My routine: I aim for 1g of protein per pound ideal body weight. On days I fall short, protein powder helps fill the gap. (Disclaimer: this protein brand is not my favorite; it’s sold on Amazon and it gets the job done since I don’t supplement with protein every day. If I start using more I will change to an isolate, third-party tested brand like the brand Ascent)
Bonus: The collagen I take has 18 grams of (incomplete) protein per serving—every little bit helps!
Reminder: These aren’t all the supplements I take—just the three I’m most consistent with and believe most women could safely benefit from (with your doctor’s clearance, of course).
If you’d like me to share more about the other supplements that have worked well for me, let me know in the comments.
Just know this: I’m nowhere near 75! 😅
A Note on Brands:
I’m not affiliated with any of these brands. I’ve just done the work to find reputable, third-party tested supplements. Buyer beware: Many Amazon-sourced supplements are knockoffs, near expiration, or worse—just flavored chalk.
Wisdom Over Worry
As I watched Suzanne Somers share her regimen, I sensed she was deeply afraid of two things; getting old and dying.
Please, let’s not distract ourselves with that kind of fear. Two things are certain:
We will age.
We will die.
Spoiler alert: Suzanne Somers passed away in 2023 after a 20-year battle with breast cancer.
It’s foolish to run from what’s inevitable. But for those in Christ, what’s inevitable is actually incredible.
“To live is Christ, to die is gain.” – Philippians 1:2
“All my days were written in Your book before one of them came to be.” – Psalm 139:16
The wise don’t ignore their limited days—they number them.
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” – Psalm 90:12
***Speaking of numbering our days. I give you this little walk and talk sharing a most ridiculous and recent day in our marriage. Listen and have a good laugh :)
So… Should You Supplement?
Maybe. It just may improve your quality of life and give you more energy for your days. Just don’t forget that supplements are for support. The main star is food!
And I pray—with a heart of wisdom—you get every day God has for you… not one less.
More importantly, I pray you live those days learning to love and care for the person you are AS a body the way Christ loved, lived in, and offered His.
